In Plain Sight – Emerald Hill
I love to wander around with no plan. I’ll often see things I’ve passed a hundred times but never noticed before or suddenly see something in a new light. This series is more pictorial and more about things that make an impression on me.
Emerald Hill in Singapore is a cute little street just off Orchard Rd. Orchard Rd is all about glitz and glam, Emerald Hill is quiet and classy especially as you venture further up the hill. The area has an old-money feel being so close to such a major shopping district but yet so serene. It reminds me a bit of the French Quarter in New Orleans. I wonder if the architecture is somehow related.
It’s hard to believe that this hill was once home to a nutmeg orchard. (It’s equally hard to believe that Singaporeans don’t use nutmeg but I digress.)
I love seeing the beautiful tile work typical of the Peranakans and the intricate door carvings. It’s also a great visual vacation from all the lights on Orchard Rd.
